Routes

Our tips to plan you holiday in Salento!

The best beaches, the best routes and much more!

Starting from Vigne Vecchie heading north:

Bay and port of Otranto (bathing is allowed both in the various bays of the town and in the port, where the water is crystal clear)
Atlantis, La Castellana (some bathing facilities of Otranto)
La Staffa, Il Canalone (little known by those who are not in the area, these two inlets with free access offer crystal clear water and less crowding)
Baia del Mulino d'Acqua (access is free by sea or for a fee passing through the campsite of which the bay is part)
"Laghi Alimini" area: named for the presence of two freshwater lakes, it offers several kilometers of sandy beaches, where equipped establishments and small free areas alternate. Among the main beaches we point out:
Baia dei Turchi, KUM beach, Riva del Sole, AquaSpeed, Frassanito, Giro di Boa Beach.

Continuing north, we meet:
Torre Sant'Andrea, a beautiful inlet with crystal clear waters and a view of the Faraglioni
Torre dell'Orso with the beach of Le Due Sorelle
the famous Grotta della Poesia
Roca Vecchia and finally San Foca (among the beach clubs we suggest Mora Mora Beach).

Starting from Vigne Vecchie heading south:

Our suggestion to fully enjoy the panorama of the Salento coast is to take the coastal road that goes down to S. Maria di Leuca. Along the way there are many places where you can stop for a swim but the path itself is just as beautiful: the road is in fact right next to the cliff and the landscape is breathtaking!
Continuing south, therefore, we suggest:

Porto Badisco with emerald green water, flat rocks called "le tagliate" and a small sandy cove
Santa Cesarea Terme with its thermal pools
the breathtaking bay of Porto Miggiano
Castro Marina, for lovers of the blue sea and the rugged coast
Cala dell'Acquaviva, a small cove with crystal clear water and surrounded by greenery
the natural pools of Marina Serra, a breathtaking scenery carved into the rock
Ciolo bay and finally Santa Maria di Leuca, the so-called "heel" of the Italian boot.

After S. Maria di Leuca and continuing north along the coast:
Pescoluse beach, the so-called "Maldives of Salento", with white beaches and Caribbean sea. Going up we suggest Lido Bora Bora in Ugento, Punta della Suina and Lido Rivabella, near the city of Gallipoli
Porto Selvaggio beach and Porto Cesareo Marina, with its white beaches and tropical flavor, Torre Lapillo beach and Punta Prosciutto
Going up again you come across the ancient Torre Colimena and the beautiful Salina dei Monaci beach: at the beach there is a nature reserve with a long history, where it is also possible to spot flamingos!

Pay attention to the wind!

Where to go to the sea in Salento when the north wind blows

In the presence of the north wind, the coast that offers the best sea conditions is the Ionian part. The sea that bathes the Adriatic coast south of Otranto up to Santa Maria di Leuca is also not very rough.

Where to go to the sea in Salento when the sirocco blows

The sea will be calm from the Lecce marina to Otranto, rough on the southern side of the Adriatic coast (from Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca) and rough or very rough along the Ionian coast.

Where to go to the sea in Salento when the north-east wind blows

The north-east wind makes the sea of the Lecce marinas agitated up to Otranto, while the situation improves from Otranto to Leuca, until it becomes optimal on the Ionian coast, where you will have a calm sea.

Where to go to the sea in Salento when the east wind blows

When the wind blows from the east, the best area for swimming in Salento goes from Gallipoli to Sant’Isidoro, that is to say on the northernmost part of the Ionian coast (towards Taranto). Instead, rough and rough sea on the entire Adriatic coast.

Where to go to the sea in Salento when the libeccio or the west blows

The Adriatic coast will have better sea conditions than those of the Ionian coast, with a preference for the stretch that goes from the marine of Lecce to Otranto. The west wind, which comes from the Salento countryside blowing from the west, makes the area around the Alimini lakes (just north of Otranto) ideal.
